Are you aware :: there’s science behind music and how we can jam out to benefit our brain and body?

To all the music fans… let’s get nerdy (+detailed, of course) on how we can intentionally use tunes to improve ::

  • anxiety

  • cognitive activity (focus / productivity)

  • exercise performance

  • happiness

  • move through sadness, grief

Nerd tip :: although music is an auditory stimulus - it ignites neural circuits in our brain that creates action across our entire body!

Neurons release chemicals (called neurotransmitters :: like serotonin / dopamine, etc.) elevating our frontal cortex’s activity - better guiding our thoughts / behaviors / actions within a given experience.

It also literally expands our capacity for neuroplasticity - providing the ability to learn more in other scenarios of life, not just what we’re honed in on in that particular moment.

Pro tip :: it’s best to listen to music in between work/exercise or during brief rest periods opposed to listening throughout.

Stick with me - let’s get more strategic about timing + type backed by data…

  • ignite motivation :: listen to music 10-15 minutes prior to doing cognitive work or exercise to best engage in what we have ahead of us

  • focus / learn / read :: silence, binaural beats (40hz), classical, brown or white noise

  • shift out of anxiety :: listen to “Weightless” by Marconi Union for (3) minutes

  • move through sadness, grief :: listen to a minimum of (13) minutes of sad music

  • shift mood to happier state :: listen to a minimum of (9) minutes of happy music

All in all, listening to 10-30 minutes of music per day has shown a statistically significant impact on physiology + certain health metrics.

I have solo dance parties all the time - many, actually while writing this - it works for me … lightens my life!

Give any of these strategies a try in pursuit of living better!
