Are you aware :: what impairs our memory?
Let’s talk about it :: how’s your memory?
To be honest, when I started doing video - I was filled with wonder how my brain would support me.
Would I have to do hundreds of takes to get the messaging I desired across?
Would the science-backed research I’m sharing stick with me long-term?
Let’s dive in :: memory / what impairs ours / how we can optimize for premium performance
(4) prevalent types of memory are ::
Sensory Memory
think :: see, feel, smell, hear, taste;
this is often thought of as the first stage of memory, lasting a very brief period
Short-term Memory
like the name, holds information for immediate use - from seconds to minutes
Working Memory
absorbs information critical to sequence into action over a short period of time;
involved in every activity + our attention but not tied to neuroplasticity
Long-term Memory
stores knowledge over long periods - from days to years
Nerd tip :: the formation of short + long-term memory almost always involves neuroplasticity - our nervous systems (brain+) ability to change in response to experience.
So, what impairs our memory from being optimal?
sleep deprivation
stress
the natural process of aging
(or as I like to refer to it :: growing wiser;)
How can we help prevent the decline?
read a book chapter without looking at our phone
redirecting focus when focus sways away / essentially filtering out distractions
sleep
nutrition
exercise
Pro tip :: aerobic exercise has been found just as effective as cognitive therapy.
