Are you aware :: what emotional contagion is?
I’ve recently shared how stress is contagious via our primary stress hormone cortisol - literally leaking out of our bodies with opportunity to be absorbed in close proximity.
Similarly, emotional contagion is this phenomenon where consciously or unconsciously we are influenced by the emotions and behaviors around us.
Our positive (or negative) attitudes can infect or inspire others.
Nerd tip :: mirror neurons are a type of brain cell that fires both when we perform an action and when we observe another performing the same action.
These neurons are believed to play a role in our empathy and understanding.
Example :: when we see someone experience an emotion, our mirror neurons may ignite, causing us to experience a similar emotion.
It has even been proven depending on the intimacy of the relationship :: obesity, divorce, happiness is contagious among family and friends.
So, how can we avoid emotional contagion (that leans negatively)?
Simple terms :: slow down.
Inventory our resentments, our frustrations with ourselves or others and transform them into forgiveness - finding compassion for flaws.
This increases our capacity, broadens the range of our nervous system and our emotional intelligence … in living lighter!
Give it a try!!
