Are you aware :: how dangerous complacency is?
Do you ever wonder why you’ve stayed in a job or relationship as long as you have?
Have you ever experienced a toxic or chaotic environment personally or professionally yet didn’t do anything to remove yourself?
What is it that doesn’t ignite us to move on? Why do we settle?
Nerd tip :: our brains are hardwired for complacency; they crave projecting certainty.
From its Latin root, complacency means :: ‘very pleasing’, ‘to be pleased’.
We tend to hold on to a complacent lifestyle because we are accomplished, or have experienced success personally and/or professionally so there’s no real urgency to achieve more or explore something new.
That ancestral brain bubbles up :: complacency keeps us safe, however - pushing past it is necessary for growth!
So, what exactly are the dangers of remaining complacent for too long - personally or professionally?
There are many, but following provides a snippet of the impact…
Missed Opportunities.
When being complacent for too long, we can experience a loss of motivation or sense of purpose where life can become monotonous and unfulfilling. Therefore, we may not take risks or explore new paths, missing out on potential advancements personally or professionally.
Skills Dissipate.
We can experience a decline in our skills and knowledge when remaining in complacency. When we aren’t actively challenging ourselves to learn new things, we’ll likely lose our competitive edge - failing to adapt to continuously changing markets.
Health Consequences.
Existing in a space where we’re not learning or growing becomes heavy. Feelings of dissatisfaction and regret will bubble up. This puts strain not only on ourselves but our relationships, potentially taking those we surround ourselves for granted + causing weakness in self.
Let’s push beyond our edges finding how we can break through our hardwired nature of complacency to live better, lighter … together!
