Are you aware :: when timing of caffeine is most beneficial?
Let’s get controversial :: caffeine as soon as we rise :: yay or nay?
There’s loads of research on this subject, +most recently a 2024 review is somewhat debunking what science has supported for many years.
Let’s dive in … but, first - regardless of the information - always keep top of mind to ::
do you (!!!)
do whatever makes you feel good
I love testing theories on myself …
+ sprinkling out my experience from my own learnings - everyone’s biology is unique, so as I do ::
allow the science to inform
but…
listen to the cues of your body to make an informed decision on how you can live better!
So, what’s the harm in gravitating toward caffeine right when we wake?
What exactly causes grogginess and/or feeling sluggish throughout our day?
Nerd tip :: adenosine is a chemical in our brain that reduces as we sleep (builds throughout our day).
When allowing adenosine to clear + our cortisol levels to naturally increase
**by not jamming coffee down our throats first thing**
science proves focus and energy may be more consistent throughout our days.
So, how long do we have to wait?
90-120 minutes, that’s it!
get up
get out (sunshine (or cloudy sky), a healthy distraction)
get h2o (initially;)
vs. insert curve ball ::
New caffeine science has recently reported there’s no reason to delay caffeine as we wake.
It did relay there’s value to delaying caffeine intake with the goal of sufficient sleep -
but without getting terribly nerdy on you, there was not much support with regards to cortisol peak or adenosine.
It was transparent that regarding sex differences, response to caffeine was mixed.
It’s important to be mindful of…
our varying hormones (men + women)
the state of our nervous system
+how caffeine impacts a given human
whether we’re anxiety prone, ingesting on an empty stomach vs. not, etc.
All that to say, if you’re looking to…
optimize your circadian rhythm
improve sleep quality
ignite energy levels throughout the day
give whatever you’re not doing a try.
See how it makes you feel …
experience the potential benefits
+ dependence on caffeine throughout the day!
Again, it will be different for everyone - but all boils down to optimizing a healthy circadian rhythm … to live better!!
